A
Address
A string of characters used to receive cryptocurrency, similar to an email address or bank account number.
B
Blockchain
A distributed digital ledger that records transactions across many computers in a way that makes it difficult to alter past entries.
C
Cold Wallet / Cold Storage
A cryptocurrency wallet that is not connected to the internet, providing better security against hacking.
Custodial Wallet
A wallet where a third party (like an exchange) holds your private keys and manages your crypto for you.
D
DeFi (Decentralized Finance)
Financial services built on blockchain that don't require traditional intermediaries like banks. High risk; see our DeFi Explained post.
E
Exchange
A platform where you can buy, sell, or trade cryptocurrencies. Can be centralized (company-run) or decentralized (protocol-based).
G
Gas / Gas Fee
A fee paid to process transactions on certain blockchains like Ethereum. Fees vary based on network activity.
H
Hardware Wallet
A physical device that stores your private keys offline, providing enhanced security for cryptocurrency storage.
Hot Wallet
A cryptocurrency wallet connected to the internet, more convenient but less secure than cold storage.
K
KYC (Know Your Customer)
Identity verification required by regulated exchanges and services, typically requiring ID documents and personal information.
N
Non-Custodial Wallet
A wallet where you control your own private keys. You have full control but also full responsibility for security.
NFT (Non-Fungible Token)
A unique digital asset verified on a blockchain. See our NFT Basics post.
P
Phishing
A scam where attackers impersonate legitimate services to steal your credentials or private keys. See Phishing Guide.
Private Key
A secret code that proves ownership of cryptocurrency and allows you to authorize transactions. Never share this with anyone.
Public Key
A cryptographic code derived from your private key that can be shared publicly. Your address is often derived from your public key.

Seed Phrase / Recovery Phrase
A list of 12-24 words that can restore access to your wallet. This is the master key to your crypto—protect it carefully. See our Seed Phrase Security guide.
Stablecoin
A cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value, often pegged to a fiat currency like the US dollar. See Stablecoins Explained.
T
Transaction Fee
A fee paid to process and confirm a blockchain transaction. Amount varies by network and congestion.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
An additional security layer requiring two forms of verification (e.g., password + code from app). See our 2FA Guide.
W
Wallet
Software or hardware that stores your private keys and allows you to send and receive cryptocurrency.
